What’s an Aim?
Your Aim is your master goal for your life.
It’s the story of your life in your imagination, looking back from the future.
The answer to the question “what do you want to be when you grow up?”
It’s the star that we steer by as we navigate the seas of life and your life’s purpose.
Ted Turner said:
You should set your goals beyond your reach so you always have something to live for.
He should have said “you should set your AIM beyond your reach”.
Why do you need an Aim?
- First of all, having an Aim will motivate and inspire you. It will give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
- YOU are responsible for your success or failure. Think about what you want to accomplish in your life and work towards it, one step at a time.
- According to The Guardian, the most common regret of the dying is: “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” If you don’t have an Aim you will wander through life, pushed and pulled by circumstance and the whims of other people.
- For many people it is not easy to set an Aim. The process of self inquiry and discovery can be life changing and worthwhile all on its own.
- Finally, when you set your sites on an Aim you embark on the Hero’s Journey, an archetypal pattern that is a fundamental aspect of human consciousness. Evoking the power of the Hero’s Journey will help you find meaning through your life lessons, something psychologists believe is more important than happiness.
So how do I figure out what my Aim is?
How do you go about articulating something as important as the Aim of your entire life? One step at a time, piece by piece. Start by thinking about what your life is like now and what you want it to look like in the future. Ask yourself questions and wait for the answers to come to you. If you need help, the Future Authoring Program from selfauthoring.com helped me to clearly articulate my Aim and many smaller goals as well.
